Hi Sam,

Nursing is not really a requirement for midwifery and nurse-midwifery is something particular to the United States. In the majority of the world, midwives are not nurses. The ACMB (American Midwifery Certification Board) administers two different credentials, the CNM (certified nurse-midwife) and the CM (certified midwife). Certified midwives have the same midwifery education and training as CNMs and they sit the same national exam as CNMs, however they enter the program directly, without becoming nurses first. Where CNMs are legally recognized in all 50 states, CMs are only recognized in few - still less than 5 I believe. Certified Professional Midwives (CPMs) also are not nurses, but they receive their credential from an entirely different organization - NARM (North American Registry of Midwives). CPMs are legally recognized (allowed to practice) in 27 states. CNMs and CMs work primarily in hospitals while almost all CPMs work in homes and birth centers.
I hope this was clear. It's quite an alphabet soup!

Excuse my ignorance, but what's the difference between a CNM and a CM? I thought midwives were also nurses?

Sorry for the silly question :P
